Master of Arts in Teaching: STEM Focus

Since 2021, Maryland has invested billions of dollars annually in education through the Maryland Blueprint for Maryland’s Future, a comprehensive plan to improve student outcomes and elevate the overall quality of education. To achieve these ambitious goals, school systems across the state will need nearly 2,000 new middle and high school teachers each year through 2030.

Stevenson University Online’s Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) with a STEM focus prepares you for initial certification in secondary education (grades 7-12). Our Master’s in Teaching online program is designed for conditionally certified teachers, recent graduates, and career changes.

Through a combination of online coursework, authentic field experiences, and a teaching internship, students of our online MAT program gain the knowledge, skills, and disposition to engage and inspire students in collaborative, innovative, and project-based learning.

Stevenson University’s educator preparation programs are approved by Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). Graduates who successfully complete the Master of Arts in Teaching program, including achieving qualifying scores on Praxis® Core (or meeting the qualifying scores on Praxis® I, SAT, ACT, or GRE and Praxis® II), are eligible for teaching certification in Maryland. Certification is also available in states with reciprocal agreements with the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) in secondary biology, chemistry, earth/space science, physics, physical science, and mathematics.

*Note: A student’s completion time is dependent upon the number of existing credits they have and can transfer, the number of credits they choose to take each term, and the terms in which they enroll.

Stevenson University Online’s Master of Arts in Teaching: Early Childhood Education (MAT:ECE) is Maryland’s first and only fully online program of its kind, addressing a critical statewide need and supporting the goals outlined in the 2022 Maryland State Plan for Higher Education. Graduates of the program are eligible for initial teacher certification in Early Childhood Education (Pre-K–Grade 3) through the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE).

Designed to fit the flexibility that working conditionally certified teachers, recent graduates, and career changers need, the online program will include two optional one-day residencies. The curriculum is designed to meet the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) requirements for Early Childhood licensure, and includes critical field-based experiences, and emphasis on teaching and supporting multilingual learners. Students will also complete a 100-day internship in a Pre-K-Grade 3 setting.

Our expert faculty and university-based mentors will provide personalized support throughout the program, including assistance with internship placement and monitoring.
