Parent Information

As a parent, you are probably eager to support your student in his or her career decisions, and it is important to remember that this is a crucial developmental growing process in becoming a young emerging professional. The Office of Career Services staff facilitates a unique career development process we call Career ArchitectureSM. Our personalized approach provides services and programs designed to empower students to create a vision of their future. Through these experiences, students will develop the tools, traits, and skills they need to hit the ground running when they leave Stevenson and will be fully prepared for wherever the road takes them.

Afford the opportunity for your student to make choices for a major and/or career

  • Yes, it is much easier to say, “Major in this” or “Do this,” but it is important to allow your student to discover his or her strengths and weaknesses. In order to get your student on the right path, it is important to let him or her develop a career direction based on individual values, interests, and skills.

Encourage an early start to career planning

  • Have your student contact the Office of Career Services to learn more about us and our services as early as possible. Have him or her set up a meeting with a career counselor to begin the journey of Personal Development.

Connect your student with friends, family members, and neighbors to learn about possible careers and employers

  • Networking is one of the most important tools when job hunting. Many career opportunities are a result of contacts. Have your student contact a friend or family member who works in the field of his or her interest to meet and talk or even shadow them to learn more about that particular career.

Encourage your student to gain experience

  • Suggest that your student do research about a career of interest them and get involved in the community or in clubs and organizations at school to learn new skills and abilities.
  • Volunteering is a great way to get your student involved in the community and discover new opportunities for employment.
  • Studying abroad and experiential learning activity are wonderful experiences recognized by employers. Encourage learning outside the classroom.
  • The winning combination: classroom, internships, experience. Through Stevenson University’s unique approach to career preparation, your student will gain the experiences needed to get ahead in the job market and life.

Help your student develop skills valued in the world of work

  • Teach and motivate your student to be able to work on a team, contribute to a project, think analytically, and apply knowledge to communicate verbally and in writing, both professionally and effectively.

Refrain from becoming overly involved in your student’s job search

  • Most employers tend not to want to hear from parents. When parents contact employers to set up interviews for their son or daughter or to see why their son or daughter did not get a job, the employer may wonder about the student’s maturity level and his or her ability to manage responsibilities on the job.
