Paralegal students at SU may participate in a law clinic course that provides valuable real world experience. The law clinic consists of two parts. In the spring, students, in partnership with the Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service, participate in tax law clinics as part of the Baltimore CASH Campaign. Students meet with clients at various clinic sites, such as Mercy Hospital and the Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service office. There, they perform a variety of tasks including greeting clients, evaluating eligibility, obtaining intake information, and preparing tax returns for electronic filing. In order to participate in the tax law clinic, students must attend an outside, day-long training session which includes IRS certification for participation in the CASH Campaign. Since the start of this program in spring 2005, SU students and faculty have prepared hundreds of tax returns for law income taxpayers as part of this program.
The second part of the law clinic is a family law clinic. Students participating in this program assist survivors of domestic violence with preparation of various legal forms and submission of court filings.
Students from other disciplines, such as accounting and human services, are invited to participate in the law clinics by taking this course. The course may be taken up to two times for credit.
