Program Objectives for the Chemistry Major

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry and instrumental analysis
  • Analyze and solve problems in chemistry
  • Search, read and interpret current chemistry literature
  • Use knowledge of basic chemical principles to summarize and support a critical analysis of current scientific advances (including both professional literature and popular accounts), novel pharmaceutical agents, legislative and regulatory issues, environmental issues, biotechnological advances, and/or advances in medicine
  • Perform laboratory techniques in all areas of chemistry, applying the theoretical concepts learned in the lecture material, collecting and analyzing data, and expressing the results in a clearly written laboratory report or in an oral or poster presentation
  • Demonstrate safe laboratory skills
  • Maintain an accurate and complete laboratory notebook
  • Plan, execute, and interpret an experiment according to the Scientific Method.
  • Collect and report data honestly and ethically
  • Demonstrate professional conduct and strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Recognize and act upon the need for continuing education
  • Evaluate scientific discovery in terms of its scientific merit and its ethical, societal, and global implications
